Access to Volunteering - NW pilot project until 6/9/10

Access to Volunteering

Everton in the Community (the community arm of Everton Football Club)  is one Merseyside charity that has benefitted from the Access to Volunteering Fund, an initiative from the Office for Civil Society which aims to increase the number of disabled volunteers by breaking down the barriers they face, through the funding of special equipment, changes to premises, and the extra cost of travel and support workers.

Everton received a £5,000 grant which will help them provide opportunities for ten disabled volunteers: in sports coaching, refereeing, IT, web design, office administration and PR.

Unlike the DWP's long-standing Access to Work programme, the Access to Volunteering grant can only be give to voluntary groups or public bodies; is limited (in the pilot study) to £5,000 per organisation; and it is the organisation that applies for the funds, not the disabled person.

The North West is one of the three pilot areas for testing the new funding, and the the final deadline for the pilots is September 6th, 2010, with a decision due in October.

Applications can be made online, or using a downloadable form.
